2010 Vietnamese Interacting As One Conference

The University of Wisconsin-Madison and UVSA-Midwest are proud to announce the 8th Annual VIA-1 Conference will be held at University of Wisconsin-Madison on the weekend of March 26-28, 2010.

Most of our parents had a dream for their children of the land where dreams can come true, where one can choose to have endless amounts of opportunity, where one can be rich or poor, and where one can grasp their dream and run with it.

For all of us in the United States of America, we live the dream that our parents dreamt. We all have different dreams, but have one goal in common, which is to succeed in life and achieve the “American dream.”
In relation to VIA-1 conference, we are trying to capture the struggles from dreaming to making our dreams real. The essence of a dream stem from motivators which drives one to achieve one’s goal by creating the steps towards making one’s dream a reality. Each of us are at a point in our life in which we can take that one extra step, from possibility to actuality.

Register before March 8, 2009 and it’s only $50!

University of Iowa Presents: Hội Xuân 2010

Tết Nguyên Đán, more commonly known by its shortened name Tết, is the most important and popular holiday and festival in Vietnam. It is the Vietnamese New Year derived from the Chinese New Year based on the Lunar calendar, a lunisolar calendar. The name Tết Nguyên Đán is Sino-Vietnamese for Feast of the First Morning. Many Vietnamese prepare for Tết by cooking special holiday foods and cleaning the house. There are a lot of customs practiced during Tết, like visiting a person’s house on the first day of the new year (xông nhà), ancestral worshipping, wishing New Year’s greetings, giving lucky money to children (li xi) and elderly people. During Tết, Vietnamese visit their relatives and temples, forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hoping for a better upcoming year. They consider Tết to be the first day of spring and the festival is often called Hội Xuân (spring festival).

This year, University of Iowa Vietnamese Student Association is proud to present “Hội Xuân 2010″ at University of Iowa, Iowa City.

Event Recap: Đêm Việt Nam Culture Show

Đêm Việt Nam is University of Michigan‘s annual cultural show that showcases different aspects of our Vietnamese heritage to anyone who is interested in learning about our culture. This year the theme of the show was “With Each And Every Step” or “Nho Lai Tung Buoc Chan.” This year we had 4 people on DVN board: Phil Le, Trang Nguyen, Lylian Dang, and Ray Sheng. There were over 50 people involved in the show whether they were emcees, performers or backstage crew. The performances we had included: Nam Hat Dance, Hue Ribbon Dance, Guy/Girl Bac Dance, Modern/Traditional Hat Dance, Hip Hop. B2Viet, vocal performance by Huy Nguyen, Ballroom Dance Showcase and fashion show. We also had guest performers: Grand Rapids Dragon Dance Crew and MSU VSA Nhay Crew.

We estimate about 400 people attended the show including MSU VSA and Purdue VSA (including UVSA’s very own Jackie and Chan!) Many family and friends drove for hours in order to support us in this show. Thanks to all the supporters, we raised $1000 through ticket sales to go the VietHope charity. It was really exciting because this year we did something new, which is to go ask at local businesses and restaurants to donate something so we can raffle them off as floor prizes, which was an extra incentive to anyone who is interested in coming to the show. Here is a link to a great set of pictures from the show. Videos are available here & here and will be uploaded to YouTube soon. Board video may be viewed here. Overall, DVN was fantastic! We had a great turnout and were super successful in raising money for VietHope.
