The Union of Vietnamese Student Associations of the Midwest (UVSA-Midwest) is dedicated to providing a safe environment where we invite individuals from diverse backgrounds to connect with our pillars of operations and share our ideals. All members of our organization, whether they are elected, volunteering, invited guests, or attending our programs, are expected to operate at the highest level of integrity as members and representatives of this organization.
Due to recent social and political events and movements such as #MeToo, UVSA-Midwest has decided to be more proactive in establishing a safe, welcoming community and environment. And so we pledged to improve our policies and practices. We set out to create robust and comprehensive community guidelines and to develop clear, simple processes. UVSA-Midwest is dedicated to empowering every member of this organization by maintaining a safe space.
As of March of 2018, we have formally launched our Safe Community Initiative. We are expanding the UVSA-Midwest Guidelines and Policies which include our zero-tolerance stance on harassment and substance abuse. We’ve established clear and simple but thorough due process procedures to enable and empower individuals to report and hold others accountable. And we are making sure it is explicitly clear that the Safe Community Initiative is a top priority within this community rather than an implicit expectation.
All members of our organization, whether they are elected, volunteering, invited guests, or attending our programs, are expected to operate at the highest level of integrity as members and representatives of this organization. We always say we’re a family here. Well, it’s time we live up to this sentiment and promise. We are going to make sure we continue to protect our family.
Effective April 1st, 2018, the Community Guidelines will be automatically enforced for all member schools, event attendees, organization staff and guests will be held to these standards.
UVSA-Midwest is committed to taking all reasonable steps to prevent harassment, and will make every reasonable effort promptly and completely to address and correct any harassment that may occur. However, UVSA-Midwest cannot take prompt and effective remedial action unless each staff or volunteer assumes the responsibility of reporting any incident of harassment immediately to UVSA-Midwest leadership.
Every report of harassment will be investigated promptly and impartially, with every effort to maintain staff or volunteer confidentiality. The complainant and the accused will be informed of the results of the investigation. If UVSA-Midwest finds that its policy has been violated, it will take appropriate corrective and remedial action, up to and including discharge of offending officers, staffs, or volunteers, and/or similarly appropriate action towards offending vendors, contractors, or members.
Reporting Without Fear of Retaliation
No UVSA-Midwest officer, director, or staff is authorized, or permitted, to retaliate or to take any adverse action whatsoever against anyone for reporting unlawful harassment, or for opposing any other discriminatory practice in the organization. This no-retaliation policy applies whether a good faith complaint of harassment is well founded or ultimately determined to be unfounded.
Retaliation is also against the law and this policy prohibits retaliation of any kind against individuals who file valid complaints or who participate in an investigation.
